CV tips

A good CV is like a good meal. It should look good, have variety and substance - and leave you wanting a little more!

Your CV will create the first impression that a prospective employer has of you, so it is vital to spend time and effort on it.

Here are a few tips that make sure you get to the top of the pile.

Keep it brief and factual

The main body of the CV should not exceed two sides of A4. Remember that the CV has two functions:

› To encourage a prospective employer to see you. This means that he/she needs to put it down wanting to know more about you, not feeling they know quite enough already thank you!

› To act as a reminder after the interview.

There is no point in blowing your own trumpet. Your opinions about your personal qualities will not count for a lot. Hard facts, on the other hand, will.

Leave the opinions to us. We will make sure that the client gets to know about all your good qualities when we talk to them about you, and they will generally accept what we say. That is one of the advantages of doing your job-hunting through Workstation.

Make it look good

How the CV looks will express a great deal about you. You need to make it an attractive 'advert' for you. Keep it neat and slightly understated, though you could include a couple of unusual elements to give a bit of character.

No matter how good-looking you think you are, leave the photo out!
