Interview tips

There would be something wrong if you were not a little nervous at a job interview. However, a few simple tips can help you feel confident and show yourself in your best light.

Be well presented

Always try to find out about the dress code of the company you are going to visit and make sure you dress accordingly. Whatever clothes you wear, make sure that they are clean and tidy. If in doubt, go for being that little bit smarter. If you are about ten per cent smarter than the people you are going to see, it will look like you care and have made an effort. That always goes down well.

Be enthusiastic

Don't put it on, but when you are talking about things that interest and excite you, make sure that your enthusiasm shows. Employers love enthusiasm.

Be prepared

Know what you are looking for in your next job and what you want to avoid. Be clear about what you have to offer an employer and do not be afraid to tell them. But be honest: know yourself and your strengths, but don't go over the top.
Take a portfolio if it is appropriate - and it generally will be. Read our portfolio tips and follow them.

Do research

Find out about the company you are going to visit. Look at their website, ask around, look in directories. Find out about the type of work they do and learn something about it, if it is new to you. Talk to them about what you have found out.

Have questions

Think in advance about the things you would like to ask. Make sure you leave the interview really understanding about the position - ask again if you don't get it the first time around. Show an interest in what they do and appreciation for what they have achieved. Ask questions that are related to the things that are most important to you in your next job. Try to find out about the company culture.

Be on time

If you experience difficulty getting there for any reason, make sure you telephone the person you are due to meet and apologise and rearrange. Always try to talk to your contact - do not just leave a message with the receptionist!

At the end of the interview

Let them know you are keen on the job (assuming that you are!) and ask them how they feel about you. This will give you the chance to deal with any issues. Find out what the next stage in the selection process is. Phone your contact at Workstation as soon as possible to let them know how it went. This can really help your chances when we talk to the client.

Good luck!
